This was the opinion aired by Bacolod City Councilor El Cid Familiaran, chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Police, Security and Jail Management, as he stressed that the 12-hour duty for members of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) “is better than the previous schedule of 8 hours a day.”
Familiaran said he supports the new schedule of duty, which will be implemented by the BCPO in compliance to the order issued by the higher headquarters of the Philippine National Police. According to Familiaran, the new schedule “suits’ the police personnel, as he explained that serving for more than 12 hours may affect the efficiency of the police personnel, especially those handling investigation and other sensitive police works. He cited the Labor Law, which provides a specific legal number of duty hours for every individual worker in the country. The 12-hour duty shift by members of the police will officially start today, Monday. Based on the directive that emanated from the Police Regional Office 6, BCPO personnel will render 12 hours of duty every day, instead of the previous eight hours, acting city director Senior Supt. Edgardo Ordaniel stressed last week. The scheme is aimed at efficient delivery of services such as maximum police visibility, and would deter policemen from sleeping during duty hours, Ordaniel said./WDJ By Ranie S.
