The Liberal Party will come up with its final slate on September 20 that it will include whoever it will adopt as guest candidates, Bacolod Councilor Sonya Verdeflor said yesterday.
Verdeflor said this will also be the time when she and her party-mates, or what they call the “First Five,” will finally decide on their direction for 2013. She said they were invited by Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson to a consultation meeting recently where they discussed some questions. But nothing is final until they file their certificates of candidacy on October 1 to 5, she added. Verdeflor said she and her party mates, Councilors Archie Baribar, El Cid Familiaran, Elmer Sy and Catalino Alisbo, who is “graduating,” have been very democratic in their relationship with one another. As to the 2013 elections, she said “Definitely, we are trying to make the pieces fit. But under the circumstances, I personally believe this is a situation where many questions will be left unanswered, since not all pieces will fit together to the satisfaction of all of them (referring to Baribar, Familiaran, Sy and herself).” Verdeflor said that although they all belong to the Liberal Party, their decision will be finalized on September 20. After that, they will respect whatever is the individual stand of each, she said. On the possible choice of Monico Puentevella as mayoralty candidate and of businessman Vladimir Gonzalez as his running mate, Verdeflor said the candidate for mayor will be the one to choose his vice mayor but this will go through the process of consultation with partymates, she said. Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson said they will declare their complete line-up once they have the guidelines on the coalition of the Nationalist People’s Coalition, the Nationalista Party and Liberal Party. Sayson said the slot in the candidate for vice mayor of Grupo Progreso is still open and they are considering several bets and will make the announcement in due time. He said there are graduating councilors of their party who are probable candidates for vice mayor. Sayson denied having met with former Vice Mayor Renecito Novero regarding the position of vice mayor, and said that the last they met was during the birthday of the Mayor in July. He said he has not attended any meeting with Novero. Councilor Dindo Ramos, one of the graduating councilors of Grupo Progreso, said they are presenting themselves for the position of vice mayor but are not very insistent on it. He said it would be favorable if their group has many choices, especially coming from their party. Ramos said he has all the factors for a candidate in his favor since he has his bailiwick, his family, and he is equipped with the experience and competence for it. But if he is not chosen, he can return to private practice as a lawyer, and has many other options available, he said. Ramos said “If the group thinks we can help strengthen the party, we are willing to contribute our services.” But if the group will invite others outside of the party, they only ask that due process is observed and their sentiments heard, he said. Ramos said they are supportive of Leonardia and Sayson. “But we cannot be forced to support candidates we do not feel like supporting,” he said. If there is no coalition between their party and the Liberal Party, they will still present a complete slate and a strong line-up, Ramos said. However, it will be much better if they are united, he said. “We are trying to prepare and equip ourselves and will field good materials. We are also ready against any of our political opponents,” Ramos added.*CGS BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO The Visayan Daily Star

Bacolod Councilor Archie Baribar yesterday said he is still undecided about the open invitation of Grupo Progreso led by Mayor Evelio Leonadia and Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson for him and his group to join the party, and said he still needs some soul-searching.
Baribar yesterday said, that would be a very touchy situation that would put him and his group Councilors Sonya Verdeflor, El Cid Familiaran and Elmer Sy in a compromising situation. They have not yet seen how determined the national coalition of the Liberal Party, Nacionalista Party and Nationalist People's Coalition is, and its trickling effect on the local situation, he said. Baribar said he is aware that some of their group members are open to it, but he would rather reserve his comment on the matter. Asked about their relationship with mayoralty aspirant Monico Puentevella and his party, Baribar described it as "civil and cold." But he said he cannot say what tomorrow will bring and, most likely by next week, there will be a clearer picture about their position on the matter. As for now, the four of them are intact, but he cannot say with certainty when push comes to shove if they can maintain it, he added. Baribar said they have their limitations and they respect each other's decision, and that is the thing that binds them. Councilor El Cid Familiaran said he felt honored by the invitation of the Grupo Progreso of the NPC and that is big thing on his part and to his group. But he will wait for the final decision of the national hierarchy on the national coalition of NP-LP-NPC, he said. He said that is a very big factor to consider particularly in his decision. He also said he does not have political differences with the group of the Mayor. But that is his personal decision, and it does not include that of his group, he said. “We are still intact and I hope that we will remain together," he added. Leonardia and Sayson said they are open to the group of the “First Five.” Sayson said the delay is caused by the coalition, since they are waiting for the guidelines from the NPC officials on how to go about it, and which party will take care of the coalition. Leonardia said they are aware that the filing period is on October 1 to 5, and that is not far from now. But with or without the coalition, they will put up a full slate, he said, adding that they are flexible and open to negotiations with those who want to join them, he added.*CGS BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO The Visayan Daily Star Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia said they will complete the line-up of the Grupo Progreso under the Nationalist People’s Coalition soon as they are all aware that October 1 to 5 are the filing date for certificates of candidacy.
Leonardia said the Nationalist People’s Coalition, the Nationalista Party and the Liberal Party have a coalition at the national level. How it will trickle down to Bacolod, is something they have to clarify with the national officials, he said. “The details have not yet been laid down to us, but in general, that is supposed to be something that is already conclusive,” he added. The Grupo Progreso party of Leonardia and Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson is now a coalition of the NP and the NPC, and the possible entry of the LP is being awaited, and is expected to strengthen the local administration party. Leonardia said they will follow what the hierarchy of the three parties say in their officials statements. He believes there should be a coalition, he said “But it all depends on how, eventually, we will handle all these details,” he added. Asked about the possibility of former Councilors Greg Gasataya, Alex Paglumotan and Celia Flor joining their group, Leonardia said “We are expecting that.” They are winnable and their track records, when they were still incumbents, and even in times when they were out of office, were also very good, he said. “We know that, on their own, they were also doing public service so they will be very good assets to the line-up,” Leonardia added. Gasataya and Paglumotan are members of the NPC. On the possibility of the “First Five” also joining their slate, Leonardia said anything is possible these days, as they have no fundamental difference, and they are also very open. He said they are just waiting for the guidelines from the national level before they finally decide at the local level. Reports said the “First Five” composed of Councilors Archie Baribar, El Cid Familiaran, Sonya Verdeflor, Elmer Sy and Catalino Alisbo, who are new members of the Liberal Party, might join Grupo Progreso, should the LP formalize the possible coalition with the NPC and NP, where Grupo Progreso is their local party affiliate. Councilor Distrito said that the formation of the three parties will be a coalition forming an extremely impressive political strength in Bacolod City. The Nationalist People’s Coalition, the Nationalista Party and the Liberal Party have a coalition in the national level By Carla N. Canet Sun Star Bacolod POLITICAL parties are now starting to fuel their political machineries to prepare for the forthcoming filing of candidacy for the local candidates set on October 1-5, 2012.
Councilor Archie Baribar who is a new Liberal Party (LP) member along with his party mates Councilors Sonya Verdeflor, El Cid Familiaran, Catalino Alisbo and Elmer Sy will attend the Liberal Party meeting set this Saturday to discuss the slate for Bacolod. Baribar who is eyeing the vice mayoralty post has remained mum in his plans as he will abide by the LP decision. "We will have a meeting on Saturday and we might be able to finalize our political positions," he said. For now, nothing is final and practically nothing is definite. As to his present political ties with former Bacolod City Representative Monico Puentevella, he said, "When a door closes, two doors might open," speculating that Puenevella's choice for Vice Mayor is with businessman Vladimir Gonzalez and not him. He said that such choice does not affect him personally and politically. "I don't need anyone. I need everyone. I will remain mysterious after our meeting this Saturday. There are communication lines open with Newks. I hope it will not be shortened." His colleagues Councilors Verdeflor, Familiaran, Sy and Alisbo will remain with him as he remains with them. Whatever his decision and the party decision will be supported by them as they all board in one boat. He added that pursuing the position of the Vice Mayor has great weight. "But we are trying to consider all factors. But the LP decision has weight that we have to consider. We cannot disregard it. LP is now our main aggrupation. by (Carla N. It also provides that P5 million will be appropriated for the conduct of the plebiscite to be administered by the Commission on Elections. BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO The Visayan Daily Star Three former councilors of Bacolod City might run for the same post under the Grupo Progreso of the Nationalist People’s Coalition.
Bacolod Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, Grupo Progreso and NPC mayoralty bet, yesterday said they have invited former Councilors Alex Paglomutan, Greg Gasataya and Celia Flor to join the party and they have responded favorably to the invitation. But he also said he would like to give them the opportunity to make the declaration. They will be joining the five incumbent councilors who are seeking re-election, namely, Em Ang, Caesar Distrito, Carlos Jose Lopez, Mona Dia Jardin and Roberto Rojas. Sayson said the track records of these former officials speak for themselves, and even if they have been out of public office for two years, they never stopped serving the people. Gasataya is currently a director of the Bacolod City Water District, while Flor is active in work involving Gender and Development. Paglomutan, meanwhile, has continued his public service as a broadcaster. On the possibility that the “First Five” composed of Councilors Archie Baribar, Sonya Verdeflor, El Cid Familiaran, Catalino Alisbo and Elmer Sy will join the NPC slate, Sayson said there are no concrete developments yet on the matter, although he is personally and officially on good terms with them. He said the candidates for positions of congressman, mayor and vice mayor will be decided by the NPC. Sayson also said there is an on going coalition at the national level among the NPC-LP and Nacionalista Party, which might have an effect on the local level. The NPC hierarchy has a directive that there will be a final coalition slate that they should consider, he said. They will also take up their meeting on the coalition and how it is going to affect their slate, he added. On the other hand, Baribar said he will attend the meeting of the Liberal Party on Saturday to discuss their line-up for Bacolod City together with his party mates. Baribar, together with Verdeflor, Familiaran, Alisbo and Sy, have been sworn in as new members of the Liberal Party last month. Baribar, who is eyeing the vice mayoralty post, said they might be able to finalize their political positions during the meeting on Saturday before the filing of the Certificates of Candidacy on October 1 to 5. “For now, nothing is final and practically, nothing is definite,” he said. LP Bacolod chairman Frank Carbon said they have continuous negotiations for the vice mayoralty candidate and are open to former Vice Mayor Renecito Novero and businessman Vladimir Gonzalez. They are also considering Baribar for the position of vice mayor, he said in an interview over ABS-CBN yesterday. However, Carbon said the choice for vice mayor will depend on the mayoralty candidate because normally it is the mayor who will choose his running mate. The choice will also depend on the party they will coalise with, he said. Carbon said they will present their line-up on the third week of this month. Baribar said their communication lines with Puentevella are open and he hopes it will not be shortened, speculating that Puentevella’s choice for vice mayor would be businessman Vladimir Gonzalez instead of him. Whatever his decision and that of the party, will be supported by his party mates as they are all boarding in one boat, he said.*CGS By:BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO The Visayan Daily Star |
