A motorcade was held Friday from the Bacolod City Government Center to the BAYS Center in Bacolod City to celebrate World Rabies Day, a press release from City Hall said.
The motorcade was participated in by Bacolod City government employees, led by executive assistant Ernie Pineda and Rex Juplo, acting city veterinarian, the K-9 Club and K-9 International, the Alliance for Global Anti-Rabies Group, the City Health Office, Public Information Office, the Bacolod City Police Office, barangays Villamonte, Singcang-Airport and Taculing, the CVO, and other entities. The theme of this year's anti-rabies drive is “Act now - stand united - end rabies". Juplo said the celebration was also timed with the death anniversary of French scientist/microbiologist Louis Pasteur, who discovered the rabies vaccine in 1879. Pasteur's research was spurred by the fact that 28,000 humans were victimized by rabies in the 1900s, the press release said. Jason Atillo, animal control officer of the City Vet Office, said Pasteur is also credited with the pasteurization process in milk, beverages, wine and beer and eventually in developing the anti-rabies vaccine. Juplo said that from January to September 2012, about 11,000 dogs in Bacolod were vaccinated, eight at the Liga ng mga Barangay office. There were four animal rabies casualties in 2011 involving three dogs and one cat. The anti-rabies vaccines were a donation of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. No human casualty was accounted for, Juplo said. Juplo reminded people bitten by dogs to simply wash the wound with strong flowing water and soap (without pressing the wound), apply medicine like iodine or even "malunggay", and immediately go to an anti-rabies vaccination center. He also reminded dog-owners to have their dogs vaccinated before the expiration of their annual vaccination, and promised a continued vaccination campaign for dogs after the celebration of the World Rabies Day per City Ordinance No. 544 authored by Councilor El Cid Familiaran. Juplo also cited the assistance of the barangays in the anti-rabies campaign being implemented by the administration of Mayor Evelio Leonardia, the release adeed.* The Visayan Daily Star
