MASSKARA Mania. The recently concluded 31st Masskara Festival celebration in Bacolod City held many firsts for me. For the first time I was able to attend a Masskara Queen Coronation Pageant since I came home to Bacolod City ten years ago and for the first time in four years since its inception that I was able to witness the Electric Masskara parade at the Tourism Strip along Lacson Street.
October 16, 2010 was also the day that I wished I could be in three places at the same time. On the said date, three simultaneous events were held namely a streetdancing competition for the school category, a Moda Masskara fashion show at the SM City Bacolod Events Center and the 2nd Masskara Motorshow Open Competition of the Negros Dragon Motorcycle Club at the SM Northwing Terminal. Thanks to the musical group Bacolodsouljaz, I found myself in the company of motorcycle enthusiasts along with their prized possessions. The panel of judges was composed of Bacolod City Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, Councilor El Cid Familiaran, Anthony Estancia, Lloyd Stewart Lee, Reman Muyco, Ryan Cuadra and Jong Omictin. In their pre-judging messages, Vice Mayor Sayson, Councilors Familiaran and Al Espino exhorted all riders to observe safety precautions foremost of which is the wearing of crash helmets while on the road. The top three winners of the competition were Jojo Fiarl, Champion and owner of a red motorcycle. 1st Runner Up was Bong Madalag while 2nd Runner Up was Jessie Sumande. Special awards were given to Jessie Sumande for Best in Sound, Bong Madalag for Best in Lights, Bong Madalag for Best in Presentation, Jojo Fiarl for Best in Paint, Jojo Fiarl for Best in Modifications and Aime Marie Moleño for Aksyon Radyo's Choice Award. In addition, there was also this yellow motorcycle owned by Gen Japitan of Silay City that was quite an eye-catcher. What makes motorcycles so appealing despite the driving hazards associated with this type of transportation? For Negros Dragon club member Jerrol Garcia, he can reach his destination much faster than when he takes a passenger jeepney. If it is well-modified and equipped with a good sound system, then it could also be a real chick drawer. Ever noticed how your teenage son whines for one to the point of exasperation? Anybody out there who's interested in acquiring a Wave 100R modified with sound may just contact Jerrol at cellphone numbers 09183335066. Price is 30K and negotiable. The Negros Dragon Motorcycle Club holds its regular meetings at the lagoon every Saturday from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Weekly dues amount to P10 per member. You know where to go if you're looking for some camaraderie and some bonding moments with your fellow motorcycle owners. Ilonggo Mania. It all started when the song "Kung Bal-an Mo Lang" by Angelkym Acusta started playing over the local airwaves. This unique song paved the way for an appreciation of songs in the local dialect. One fine Sunday morning everybody woke up to a different Hiligaynon tune by a group called Bacolodsouljaz. Thanks to their media exposure by ABS-CBN Bacolod's Mag TV Na Amiga, their song "Basta Ilongga" gained prominence during the Masskara season. This catchy song praising the qualities of an Ilongga was used as background music for the parade of Masskara Queen candidates in Filipiniana attire during the Coronation Pageant held at the USLS Coliseum last October 10, 2010. The group's members are Jered Guacena, John Francis Earl Bernales and Ella Junsay. To date, their "Basta Ilongga" video in YouTube has been viewed 7,487 times since its upload last September 19, 2010. In local standards, this is quite a feat and a solid proof of their rising popularity. A video of their second public performance at the 2nd Masskara Motorshow Open Competition was uploaded by this writer in YouTube. For bookings of Bacolodsouljaz, kindly contact their Manager Miss Rhosie Abanto at cellphone numbers 09186929470 and 09156787448. Published in the Sun.Star Bacolod newspaper on October 25, 2010.
