A proposed ordinance providing hospital, accident and death insurance to all barangay officials, tanods, barangay health workers and lupon members filed before the Bacolod Sanggunian is up for public hearing.
The proposal was filed by Councilors Caesar Distrito, Em-Legaspi Ang and Carlos Jose Lopez. Distrito said the ordinance aims to provide hospital, accident and death insurance to barangay officials, workers and volunteers who are always at the forefront of public service and are prone to accidents and trouble. It also aims to give assistance to barangay tanods who serve as volunteers or police auxiliaries who help maintain peace and order without the benefit of protection, he said, adding that some of them have died in the line of duty but received no benefits since they have no insurance, and some are burdened with hospital bills. Meanwhile, the SP approved a resolution requesting Social Services and Development Office head, Sally Abelarde, through the Office of the Mayor to apprehend or round-up rugby boys and girls in the city. Authored by Councilor El Cid Familiaran, the resolution said this will at least minimize the harm brought by their undesirable acts, while the DSSD is preparing appropriate programs and services for them.*CGS Visayan Daily Star
