An ordinance institutionalizing Arbor Day in Bacolod City, was approved on final reading by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.
The ordinance enjoins the participation of everyone, and requiries city scholars/summer jobbers students and students of Bacolod City College to plant at least 10 seedlings every year. Authored by Councilor El Cid Familiaran, the ordinance said city scholars/summer jobber students and BCC students will plant at least 10 seedlings during tree planting months, under the supervision of the head of the Public Employment Services Office or BCC administrator. Through the ordinance, the city will declare the last Saturday of June and every year thereafter, as its Arbor Day. It added that, for effective tree planting activities, the city should declare the months of June, July, August and September as tree planting months of every year, to kick off on the last Saturday of June to coincide with the country’s and international annual observance. Under the ordinance, the Environment and Natural Resources Office is mandated to create and establish a seedling nursery and detail a city-paid worker for maintenance. Meanwhile, the SP approved on second reading Wednesday an ordinance establishing a sustainable program for children with special needs in Bacolod City, and also passed a resolution requesting Mayor Evelio Leonardia to implement the Bacolod Archives Ordinance, authored by Councilor Em Legaspi-Ang.
