BACOLOD City – Councilor El Cid Familiaran, Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on urban poor, housing and resettlement chairperson, will hold a public hearing on Aug. 27 to tackle the requests of at least 100 illegal settlers in Barangay 41 set to be displaced by a mall construction. Familiaran said the residents recently wrote him, asking that the city government install streetlights and water pumps at the relocation site (Arao property) in Barangay Vista Alegre here before they move there. The councilor said the affected families are willing to transfer only if basic services are available thereat. Aside from the residents, invited to the public hearing were representatives from Bacolod Housing Authority, National Housing Authority, City Engineer’s Office, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Yanson Group of Companies (YGC), and Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. (Bredco). YGC and Bredco have expressed interest in providing water pumps and electric posts at the relocation site, Familiaran explained. The city government could spend as much as P1.5 million once it grants the residents’ request. Those living at the compound of the defunct Bacolod Murcia Milling Company are set to be evicted after the Araneta family sold the property to a mall developer. Familiaran said each of the families received from the Aranetas P10,000 financial assistance for their relocation./PN by Mae Singuay
